Canadians more than ever are cutting the cord on their landlines. In a article posted in the National Post they stated that Statistics Canada reported recently, that last year 21% of all households solely relied on cell phones. And it’s no longer just the younger generation that’s hanging up on the home phone.
(“Why did you get rid of your landline?”) “It cost too much. I just didn’t think it was necessary”.
Stats Canada says in 2008, 8% of all Canadian households relied exclusively on cell phones. In 2013, that number jumped to 21%.
I remember when I started my Online Digital Marketing entrepreneur journey back in 2010 people thought I was crazy. They said there is no way that mobile devices would fly and that online digital marketing was just a fade. I remember when I used the phrase on them saying that “Computer’s will become obsolete in 10 years.” they would give that crazy look and literately turn there heads on me. It was if they thought I was crazy. When I mentioned a QR code and it’s function to blend the offline world with the online world they would say, “I don’t think so”. I got so many funny looks.
But I am so glad I stuck with it. There was no university or college teaching this stuff. So I had to self teach myself and I headed to be trained by the most world class online entrepreneurs. I had to figure out what they where doing and bring a system and program to the local entrepreneur because I knew sooner or later they would have to be there….online….if they where going to move forward in their business in the 21st century contrary to their belief.
Today, we can do everything with our mobile phone. Mobile and Online Digital Marketing and Advertising is here to stay! Who would ever think that the landline phone would become obsolete. But it is and landline phone companies are going to have to re-group their product line if they are going to stay in business.
Still, 83 percent of Canadian households have a cell. But as of 2013, only 56 percent had a landline.
In the video above, that my local news station aired, a woman ditched her landline four years ago: “Just cause I’m not home very often. It’s easier than maintaining two voice mails because you got 30 emails and 50 passwords”.
I think there is still some ways yet to go when working with local business’s. Landlines are still a main cost and a very important piece of hardware in their business.
I agree that landline will become obsolete in households especially. In our home we still have a landline. The cost for our landline is bundled in with other services from our service provider such as the internet and cable so I get it relatively cheap. Not to mention that since I have a home office, the long distance charges are way much cheaper on my landline than my cell phone. Until the cell providers can reduce their long distant charges, I will continue to have my landline. I also use Skype a lot for my meetings. Skype is zero cost and there is a video option as well so the client can see me and I can screen share strategies and tactics with them.
Do you still have a landline still? If so, when do you plan on ditching your landline phone? Do you find your long distance charges cheaper on your landline vs your cell phone? I would love to hear your comments.
