Teams are critical in growing a local business in today’s new 21st century economy of the digital age. Before this digital age thing it was simple. We just had employees. We would hold weekly, monthly meetings to share and collaborate the owners ideas etc., and then get to work. The CEO still had control under one roof. But in today’s world where just about everyone shares stuff online with everything from personal to professional it is harder for CEO’s to control and quite frankly it is scary. So putting together strong teams are highly beneficial to a local business.
Sales and Marketing was always highly categorized as one department. You always heard it, “Our Sales and Marketing Team”. But today I see them totally different especially based on this new economy. They should be broken down to two separate entities. One a Sales Team and the other a Marketing Team. Very seldom do you come across a person who loves both Sales and Marketing. Many marketers don’t love sales and many sales people don’t like marketing. So with the onset of the digital world it is critical to have a Sales Team and a Online Digital Marketing Team.
The Online Digital Marketing Team can put systems together that blends both offline and online strategies to drive leads to the Sales Team. From there the Sales Team closes the sale. Each team spends hours upon hours perfecting their education and skills needed to increase revenue and client database for a local business. Combining these two together in today’s economy is not very effective, in my opinion.
The way I see it there should be the following teams set up in every local business: Management, Marketing, Sales, Operational, Production and Customer Service. You can then create and develop each team to increase a local business’s growth. Trying to change from old traditional ways to the new digital age of setting up your teams internally can be a challenge. But it is critical to growth. For example, in the auto dealership marketplace they have the Internet department and then the BDC department. But really? What are their true functions? Are their functional roles efficient in today’s new economy? Is it still a smooth journey of taking the online consumer to offline in a very seamless and systematic process? It may worth taking a look at.
T. Harv Ecker (my mentor) said it well, “The #1 skill I would teach my kids would be Marketing!”. Marketing gets your business out there attracting leads and then the Sales team closes the deal. Simple as that! Without effective Marketing you have no sales especially in the digital world. We are really getting away from huge costs of old traditional ways of advertising. Now of course a strong less expensive digital marketing campaign, will become the new normal of advertising. Not every piece of advertising I say will be illuminated completely, but I feel more emphasizes should be put on a solid Online Digital Marketing Wheel System. Having a strong Marketing system in-place running 24/7 will never falter a local business. You can check out T. Harv Ecker’s audiobook, “Secrets Of the Millionaire Mind” here. Simply just put his name in under search.

I love audiobooks these days, thank goodness to the digital era, as it is hard for me to sit down for hours reading. I recently came across an audiobook “The 5 Dysfunctions Of A Team: A Leadership Fable” by Patrick Lencioni. He discusses The Absence of Trust, The Fear Of Conflict, Lack Of Commitment, Avoiding Accountability and Being Inattentive To Results.
I would highly suggest his book for local business entrepreneurs because strong teams are critical to growth. The 5 Dysfunctions Of A Team will help you deal with the common struggles in business and provide solutions on how to deal with them in a practical way.
What kind of teams do you have in your local business? Have you made any recent team changes to support your local business in this new economy? I have also posted a video of his interview for you here:
