Google Ad’s took over the new billboard on New York City’s Times Square. There are two cool things about this debut:
1. The billboard ad was interactive with users smartphones, which makes me wonder about the future of advertising.
2. Will there be a new trend in interactive ads.
Google became the inaugural advertiser on the mega screen in Times Square, which nearly runs the length of a football field from 45th to 46th Street along Broadway and it is eight stories tall. The display on this mega screen is made up of 24 million pixels and it is the highest resolution LED screen size in the world. Just think a normal average size computer screen of 640×480 = 307,200 pixels or 0.3 megapixels as described by Wikipedia. In a post written by Business Insiders they stated that “Passers-by where able to use Google’s Androidify app on Android and iOS to create their own Android character to play with on the big screen using their smartphones from Monday afternoon through Tuesday.
Those that couldn’t make it down to Times Square could still submit their character to appear on the big screen via Google’s Androidify app. If it appeared on the billboard, Google would send them an email of the character up in lights.” This is powerful marketing and advertising! Imagine, a simple smartphone upload, to an email so you could see your character on the big jumbo screen in Times Square? WOW, simply AMAZING but more importantly powerful! When our marketing and advertising is driven by technology the creativeness is just mind boggling…but fun! I love it!
The company also plans to “gift” media space and time to six non-profit organizations and one Google-related cause project: Made with Code (internal to Google); Charity Water; WWF; Khan Academy; NRDC; Donors Choose and Give Directly. Google reportedly paid an estimated $2.5 million to rent the space for four weeks.
The cost of advertising on the billboard space, which is situated above the Marriott Marquis Hotel and operated by Clear Channel, has not been disclosed. The companion Androidify app is free on the Play Store for Android.
I think the interactiveness in this debut was just incredible. This is a HUGE breakthrough for marketing and advertising? What do you think?
